Chesham Stags took to the field against Wasps, facing a strong wind in the first half but showing confidence in their attacking play. The early exchanges saw Chesham asserting dominance in the scrum, providing a solid platform for the forwards to make inroads. Veteran Boorman rolled back the years with some trademark hard carries, setting the tone for the pack.
Despite challenging conditions, the Stags controlled much of the territory, with Gabi making repeated breaks through the midfield. Their persistence paid off when Stacey crashed over from a well-worked series of forward pick-and-goes. However, Wasps struck back against the run of play, crossing for an unconverted try to level the score at 5-5 after 35 minutes.
Just before the break, Chesham suffered a setback when Stacey was shown a yellow card. Wasps capitalised immediately, moving the ball wide to score and take a 10-5 lead into halftime.
The second half began with Chesham battling to clear their lines while a player down. Despite a dominant scrum, a Wasps scrum-half pounced on an opportunity to break away and race half the length of the pitch to score under the posts, extending the lead to 17-5. A series of penalties allowed Wasps to build momentum, crossing again to make it 22-5.
Chesham responded in style, taking advantage of a smart quick restart. Georgie made a brilliant run and Stacey scored with another smart finish off the move, with Big Al slotting the conversion to bring the Stags back into the contest at 22-12. However, Wasps quickly struck back, their scrum-half sniping around the blindside to add another try.
The Stags showed resilience, with Emma Leek breaking the defensive line and driving Chesham into opposition territory. But another break against the run of play saw Wasps extend their lead further, sealing a 34-12 victory.
Despite the scoreline, Chesham showed plenty of positive signs, particularly in the set-piece and their attacking intent. The Stags will take plenty of learnings from this contest as they look ahead to their next challenge.
