Chesham RUFC

After a solid warm up, the lads went into the huddle and the end of it, not only they, but the crowd and opposition knew who we were! For the first time this season, 'Chesham' echoed round our hallowed turf!

 

Despite a good counter ruck and turnover by Gera, a strong start by Aylesbury led to a try and neat conversion.

 

A set of exchanges mid-field then followed, leading to a Stags kick and George taking the team towards the corner.  Driven back from the lineout, Aylesbury scrambled and a looping run and power for the line sees William score under the posts, tidily converted by Freddie.   

 

More exchanges and tit for tat taking place, but massive improvement as the first half continues.  From a line out in the corner, the ball runs through a number of players' hands, is off-loaded in the tackle and George scores a cracking try. 

 

A fantastic try follows, with parents on the sideline already awarding 'try of the season' as the ball pings out the side in our 22, is picked up by Oliver N, passed to Stanley who burns over the try line. 

 

As half time approaches, great hands from Oliver H at the line out and a penalty is awarded. Further phases and Re finishes an overlap with a glorious dive in the corner. 

 

 

The start to the second half is categorised by our Stags not dropping 10 on quick penalties and Aylesbury are rewarded with an early try and successful conversion. 

 

There follows a temporary reduction in reporting as I went and fished the ball our of the trench in the building work, which was  bit dicey for a second!  On regaining my composure, I can see great tackling holds Aylesbury off for a while but wave after wave sees another try driven over.  The points are close now. 

 

Aylesbury's powerful number 8 is increasingly causing problems through the middle and Aylesbury draw ahead. 

 

However, a much better scrum leads to another William try.  James' conversion sails through and we are up by one point going into the last ten minutes...

 

Minutes after the restart, a great running line from Toby breaks the tackle and some great phase work takes the close to the try line with a penalty awarded.  A tap and go from James feeds Noah for a dive over the line. 

 

There are a range of views on the touchline of how long is left, ranging from 'we're already in stoppage time' to 19 minutes! Another dynamite run from Stanley and we're under the posts again.  

 

Good physical strength from Jaran in the final breakdown and we righly get a penalty in our own 22.  A sensible tap and kick out and we are 1 from 1 in the league!  

 

 

A really well played match from both teams and excellent on pitch leadership.  A good contest, in the right spirit.
